Our Story

Special Steps began in 2021, when Becky opened her home to support a small group of children with additional needs. With care, creativity and a deep understanding of each child as an individual, she adapted her home environment to create a calm, nurturing space where up to nine children could feel safe, understood and supported.

As families shared their experiences and word spread, more and more parents reached out for help. It quickly became clear that the need for specialist support was growing. Driven by a desire to ensure no child missed out, Becky set out to find a larger space where Special Steps could grow.

After months of hard work, fundraising and renovating a local building, the first Special Steps nursery opened its doors in 2022 — now known as the Panda Room. With the support of a passionate and dedicated team, the setting continued to develop, alongside a growing waiting list of families seeking the same specialist, child-centred care.

In 2024, Special Steps took its next step forward, securing a second premises to support children aged 1–3 years. This allowed the Panda Room to become our pre-school provision, creating more space, supporting a wider age range, and offering even more children the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in an environment designed especially for them.

What began as a small, home-based setting has grown into a specialist provision supporting more children — without ever losing sight of the individual child at the heart of everything we do.
